The Direction Générale de l'Alimentation (DGAL - General Direction of Food) is a subdivision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food- Processing and Forests. Its field of competence covers the quality and protection of plants, the health and protection of animal populations, the health monitoring of food, the food chain supply and the border patrol controls. It's levers reside in the legal department, control measures, sanitary police and handling of sanitary emergencies. It also intervenes at the European and international level to defend the French positions. It directs the national policy on food and coordinates action plans adapted to local situations. |

The RESPOND project is one component of USAID’s Emerging Pandemic Threats (EPT)program and coordinates activities with three other EPT projects: PREDICT, PREVENT and IDENTIFY. RESPOND collaborates with other international agencies, such as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to build capacity in emerging zoonotic diseases "hot-spots", especially through academic strengthening and university networks in East and Central Africa, and Southeast Asia.
